According to the 2013 World Vision survey, Uganda was ranked 16th among 25 countries with highest rate of early marriage, with 40% of girls children marrying before 18 years and 12% before they are 15 years.
In analyzing the point of domestic violence, report indicates that districts with lake shores ; Namayingo, Buvuma and Mayuge are the key to the cases of school dropouts and sexual violence leaving a serious negative impact on health hence spread of HIV virus at high rate on islands.
This forced the residents and the local leaders of Bukhooli island in Namayingo district to embark on a fundraise drive where the sun of 18million shillings to support girl child to remain in schools started as well as stopping early marriages and sexual violence cases on islands.
During the fundraising ceremony at Sigulu Primary School, Sigulu Sub-County, Bukhooli Island in Namayingo district.
Peter Babu Okeya, former Member of Parliament of Bukhooli Islands says that school dropouts, cases of early marriages and abortion is now standing at 26% on the islands.
He adds that it’s all due to over poor support of children while in schools.
Speaking to Namayingo Senior Probation Officer, Gonza Mbulamu, stresses domestic violence being the order of the day in four sub counties of Sigulu, Banda, Dolwe and Buhemba sub county, which has led to high spread of HIV virus among the families and in relation to the life.
In addition he said, most of the youths on these islands fear testing for their life and others have failed to meet or get medical facilities like drugs.
As a result of school dropout and infection of HIV virus, Mr Kaawo Kawere Naayi, the District Education Officer, added that many parents have failed to meet their children’s need which has left these young girls to look for men who can help them adding that fishermen also have tried to challenge girl children who at school with money hence disorganizing their minds to dropout from schools.
Due to increased cases of sexual violence, Mr Sanya Ronald, the district chairperson he condemned the act of health workers of selling government funds I.e Condoms and drugs.
Finally cautioned them to stop immediately if not they will be countries and prosecuted to the court of law.
