The long-awaited summit of the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) is to be held today, Friday.
IPOD brings together all political parties with representation in Parliament. Currently, they include the National Resistance Movement (NRM) the current chair, FDC, Democratic Party (DP), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), and Justice Forum (JEEMA).
The Friday summit will be chaired by President Yoweri Museveni as the current chairperson of IPOD.
The summit is to take place at Kololo Independence Grounds, in Kampala.
Though other political parties have been pushing for this meeting to discuss the post-election period, FDC and JEEMA said they cannot attend when the country is still facing human rights violations.
While addressing journalists at the party’s weekly press briefing at the party head offices in Najjanankumbi on Monday, FDC spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju said the party has taken a decision not to take part in the summit when Ugandans are still suffering at the hands of the security forces.
“We cannot be part of this summit when the situation is as it is in the country when our people are being arrested anyhow by the military. We do not just want to go and have a cup of tea with the President and we are not against those who are going to attend. They will tell us what will be discussed,” Ssemujju said.
On Tuesday, the National Unity Platform (NUP) also backed FDC’s decision.
NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi said IPOD was started with the aim of bringing together all parties and solving national issues together, but it later started dancing to President Museveni’s tunes.
Ssenyonyi said the IPOD meeting would make sense only if all participants are given equal treatment.
However, NRM secretary general Justine Kasule Lumumba said IPOD brings together all political parties represented in Parliament thus this is their time to meet and air out their grievances.
Lumumba added that if any party has a complaint about IPOD, it’s time to have it tabled and discussed such that it’s handled than taking it to social media where they won’t get any solutions.
