Jailed opposition politicians Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana will learn the fate of their bail application on June 29.

The International Crimes Division of the High Court on Thursday set June 29, 2022 as the date they will be ruling on the bail application by the legislators.

In a session presided over by Lady Justice Elizabeth Jane Alividza, the prison authorities were tasked with presenting a report on their health which will inform the decision of the court.

Lawyers Ladislaus Kiiza Rwakafuzi, Medard Lubega Sseggona and Shamim Malende who represented the accused asked court on Thursday to review their client’s bail application, saying that the MPs were arrested immediately after Masaka court judge Victoria Nakintu had released them.

The MPs told court that their health condition is not good and that they had been denied access to specialised treatment.

Allan Ssewanyana told court that his constituents in Makindye West have not had representation on the floor of Parliament in over 250 days, yet the law states that an MP will not be away from Parliament for over seven months.

“As members pf Parliament, we have a duty to serve this nation. The claims that were put against us were more less the same as the first ones…” Ssewanyana said. Ssegirinya represents Kawempe North.

Prosecution led by Richard Birivumbuka however asked court to dismiss the bail application claiming that it is out of procedure and that the suspects still have numerous cases to answer.

Prosecution alleges that Ssegirinya, Ssewanyana and others still at large unlawfully murdered a one Joseph Bwanika on August 2, 2021 at Kisekka B Village in Lwengo District.

The accused are also said to have participated in the killing of Kiiza Mugerwa, Sulaiman Kakooza and Taddeo Kiyima.

Birivumbuka told court that the detention of the MPs is not illegal.
